Do I need a TOEFL and
TSE?
International students must take both the TOEFL and the TSE. The minimum
score for the TSE is 50. For TOEFL, students must score a minimum of 550
(paper based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based).
When is the latest I can apply?
Although students do apply at all times of the year, you are encouraged
to begin the MIS in the Fall semester. This assumes you have the
necessary coursework and have been admitted to the MIS program. To
ensure admittance to the program, you must apply by March 15 for the
following Fall.
Can I transfer
graduate hours from another college or university or study-abroad
program?
Because the course offerings in our MIS program are unique, all computer
information courses for degree credit must be taken at the U of A.
Elective courses can be transferred from another university. The
Graduate School of Business requires that the course meet the following
criteria in order for you to receive transfer credit:
- The course must be taken at an AACSB
accredited institution;
- The credit hours cannot be applied
to obtain another degree;
- The student must be enrolled as a
graduate student at that institution;
- Transfer credit is limited to 6
hours of coursework.
I am currently a
U of A undergraduate student majoring in Information Systems. Can I
begin taking MIS courses before I graduate?
Dual enrollment in the undergraduate and graduate programs is allowed,
but only in the last semester of your senior year. To be dually enrolled
you must be completing your undergraduate degree requirements and be
accepted to the Graduate School of Business. Your must specifically
apply to the Graduate School of Business for dual enrollment. Tuition
charged during this final undergraduate semester is computed at
undergraduate rates.
What are the
prerequisite courses?
The computing background subject areas (courses) are VB.NET, Java, C++,
Csharp), analysis
and design, and management information systems principles. The business
background subject areas are accounting, management,
economics, and business statistics.
Is the MIS
degree available part-time?
Yes, the Professional MIS courses are offered in the evening.
What computer
languages do I need?
To begin the MIS courses you will need competency in a computing
language (VB.NET, Java...) one of
which must be COBOL. The other language may be advanced COBOL or Visual
Basic, Java, C++ , and others.
Do I need a
bachelor's degree in information systems in order to be admitted to the
MIS Program?
A student with an undergraduate degree in any field is encouraged to
apply: However, MIS students beginning the required courses for the MIS
degree are presumed to have background knowledge of business and
information systems (information technology). Depending on your
undergraduate degree and work experience, you may need to take some
courses in preparation for the MIS.
May I submit GRE
scores in lieu of GMAT scores?
GRE scores may be substituted for GMAT scores in certain circumstances. The MIS Advising
Committee usually accepts only official GMAT scores.
Is financial aid
available to MIS students?
Resources to cover educational expenses are available from a number of
sources. A limited number of assistantships are awarded to MIS students
each year. The Department of Information Systems also awards some
scholarships to highly qualified incoming MIS students. In order to be
considered for assistantships and scholarships, your application must be
received by the primary application deadline of March 15. Information
about additional sources for financial aid can be obtained from the U of
A Office of Financial Aid.
Is there a
minimum GMAT required for admission to the MIS Program?
There is no minimum GMAT required. The MIS admissions committee looks at
many factors in admitting students to the MIS program. These include
your undergraduate academic record, your GMAT score, your resume,
recommendations, relevant work experience, and leadership potential.
Will courses
taken at another college or university meet the requirements for
entering the MIS Program?
Courses at other universities can give students the proper background
knowledge for entering the MIS program. You can submit a course
description to the MIS program director for approval. |
